Julianne's gems ‘TURNING 60 IS A PRIVILEGE'

A hit on the big screen, she works just as hard at keeping her family happy
Julianne's gems ‘TURNING 60 IS A PRIVILEGE'

It wasn’t exactly the birthday Julianne Moore had imagined. In December last year, the Still Alice star was in lockdown with her husband and two children when she turned 60.

“It was just dinner with my family,” shares the flame-haired actress. “It wasn’t a blow-out or anything. I was thankful that we were able to be together.”

‘I was laser-focused, but I did find my personal life wasn’t successful’

Despite the lack of fanfare, marking the milestone was a joyful occasion for the Oscar winner, who has never been one to tiptoe around the subject of ageing.

“I don’t think we have to any more,” she says matter-of-factly. “It seems so silly to talk about it as something negative when it is a privilege to continue to age.”

And don’t get her started on the phrase “women of a certain age”.

“Oh, I don’t know where the term came from. But I actually said to someone who used it recently, ‘When you say that, it sounds like the age is so horrible, you don’t want to mention it.’ Whereas I just don’t think that’s true.

“We all know, especially now when everything is documented, how old everybody is, and it doesn’t really matter. This idea where we can no longer mention age is archaic – so I’d like to get rid of that!”

With more than 70 films under her belt – and still regarded as one of Hollywood’s most admired stars – Julianne has more than earned the right to say it how she sees it.
