'Dennis was not faithful to me for a long time and that was very painful'
Meg Ryan made us cry - and then cry with laughter - in a string of romantic comedies that have gone down in history as all-time classics.
Now, at the age of 60, the star once affectionately dubbed "America's Sweetheart" is set to make her comeback in her first rom-com in 13 years. The mum-of-two will direct and star alongside The X-Files actor David Duchovny in the comedy What Happens Later, about a pair of former lovers who accidentally encounter each other in a snowstorm, decades after their split.
Revisiting the genre that catapulted her to stardom in the late '80s is a surprise move from the iconic leading lady, who turned her back on fame several years ago, saying she was "burned out".
"I understood it was a compliment about being lovable," Meg said of her image as the ultimate girl next door. "But it also felt like ideas were being projected onto me that had nothing to do with me. The girl next door to what? I never felt like a very conventional person."
With Tom Hanks in You've Got Mail.
Ironically, if it hadn't been for a lucrative side-hustle while studying journalism at university, the world would never have heard of Meg. Needing money to pay her bills, the cash-strapped student landed a role in the soap opera As the World Turns and appeared in a series of TV commercials.
The lure of the big screen meant she ended up dropping out of university and in 1986 she landed a small role in the hit movie Top Gun.
