Now We Are Six: Inside the Prince’s Laid-back Birthday.

The Boy Who Doesn't Know He'll Be King George Turns Six!

When you’re turning six and a bit shy and you’re asked where you’d like to spend your birthday, you might well say, “At home with Mummy and Daddy and my brother and sister.”

And that’s pretty much what Prince George said to his parents, Prince William and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge. Yes, the boy who will be king has simple tastes.

According to one insider, “George’s favourite things are spending time with his mum, cooking pizzas from scratch and pottering about in the garden.”

So that’s what he did last week when he turned six.

George’s love of the outdoors is partly down to Kate – “Rain or shine, they’re dragged outside,” she once said of her parenting style – and partly down to his grandfather, the Prince of Wales.

Charles is a devoted grandpa and loves spending time with his elder son’s elder son – so much so that he converted part of his own garden at Highgrove into a playground for George when he was two. Since then, they’ve picnicked together there every summer (with pizza on the menu, of course).

Charles says he learnt the importance of making time for little ones from his grandmother, the late Queen Mother.

“It’s a different part of your life,” he says. “The great thing is to encourage them, show them things that take their interest. My grandmother did that – she was wonderful. It is very important to create a bond when they are very young.”
