Mary Berry is known for her nice-as-pie demeanour on TV, but the former Great British Bake Off judge has confessed she was a bit of a saucy devil when she first met her husband Paul.
In fact, the 85-year-old has admitted that he was just one of many when, after being introduced by her brother, they first ‘sort of did things together’.
Talking to Sue Perkins on her podcast An hour or so with…, Mary revealed, ‘I had another boyfriend in Bath, and he [Paul] was in London, and I used to go home at the weekend… Paul was the London one, and I had a Bath one. Actually, there were several in Bath. You keep your options open.’
Mary and Paul went on to get married in 1966 at Charlcombe Church near her parents’ home in Bath – but he had to propose three times before she said yes!
In a 2017 documentary for her 50th wedding anniversary, Mary told her husband, ‘I do remember the first proposal. I think you were drunk.’
‘Well, I might have been,’ said Paul. ‘It’s a big step. You don’t go into something like that without a bit of fortification.’
