Ever wondered how some people live to 90, or even 100? Many centenarians live in so-called ‘Blue Zones’ across the world, where rates of chronic diseases are, incidentally, also lower. Regions in Sardinia, Greece and Japan are among these, thanks mostly to their high intake of locally grown food and drink (yes, including wine!) and healthy eating habits. But you needn’t live on a sunny island or near a vineyard in order to live longer. Here, the experts reveal the best foods for longevity...
1 Blueberries
‘Berries are high in antioxidants and they protect our heart,’ says Suzy. ‘Studies in which participants ate blueberries or strawberries daily for several weeks reported improvements in blood pressure, signs of oxidative stress, plus total and LDL cholesterol. In addition, berries have anti-cancer properties,’ she adds. Research has shown that consumption could help prevent cognitive decline associated with ageing.
2 Olive oil
This Mediterranean diet staple contains heart-healthy fats, which Ruth explains, ‘Have been shown to reduce the decline in cognition seen with age, reduce risk of heart disease and help to keep you a healthy weight.’ She says, ‘The monounsaturated fat found in olive oil also protects you from many chronic disorders, including heart disease.’
3 Tea
Time to pop the kettle on. ‘A study of more than 130,000 adults, aged up to 95, found that the non-cardiovascular mortality rate was 24% lower in regular tea drinkers and they enjoyed better overall general health and activity levels,’ says Dr Brewer. ‘If you are watching your caffeine intake, then a decaffeinated brand will still provide beneficial antioxidants.’
