Carefully lifting the baby seat from the car, I cooed at my cute newborn son, Morgan. ‘Come and meet your baby brother!’ I called, and out of the house thundered my 11st great Dane, Jaxon, and schnauzer, Teddy. Then they screeched to a halt and followed at my heels as I carried baby Morgan inside.
They’d been patiently waiting to meet the latest member of their gang. It was July 2017 and, after five days in hospital, we were finally able to bring Morgan home. ‘The pooches missed you so much,’ my fiance Mike, then 26, smiled. He’d been watching them between ward visits.
‘What do you think?’ I said, carefully showing the baby to my boys. They gently sniffed and sniffed, unsure what this little creature was. Teddy lost interest, sauntering back to his bed.
But Jaxon didn’t budge, sitting next to me as I fed Morgan. He kept snuffling the edge of his blanket, and every time I moved he followed me.
‘You love him already, don’t you?’ I smiled, patting his head. Jaxon was my first baby, really. I’d insisted that I’d wanted a great Dane when Mike and I moved in together back in 2010.
