Once upon a time, electric cars seemed like something futuristic that only very wealthy people could afford, but that’s rapidly changing.

Most car manufacturers are producing electric vehicles (EVs) with lower price tags while phasing out internal combustion engine cars (ICEs – ie those fuelled by petrol). In fact, industry experts say ICEs and EVs will be similar in price by 2024 .

If you’re pondering going electric to help lower your carbon footprint, here are three points to consider.

DOLLARS & CENTS

While EVs are getting more affordable, they’re still more expensive than ICEs. A basic EV is at least $45,000-plus, and some are in the six-figure range. However, most state governments offer rebates and incentives, which could save you a little money.

The good news: EVs are cheaper to maintain than petrol cars. They have fewer parts, which means lower maintenance costs, and are cheaper to run – electric charging costs less than refuelling with petrol. The Australian Green Vehicle Guide estimates an EV will cost $700 to charge each year. By comparison, most Aussies are spending around $4000 a year (and more in regional areas) to refuel ICEs.
