Grandmother-of-seven Jane has come face to face with some of the most dangerous men in the nation

Retired prison officer Jane Lohse still feels a shiver run up her spine when she thinks back to the day she looked pure evil in the eye.

The grandmother-of-seven had recently started working at Lithgow Maximum Security Prison, when she was asked to hand deliver lunch to notorious serial killer Ivan Milat in his cell.

“There was a grille between us and I looked at him, and you know how your eyes just lock on somebody?” Jane tells Woman's Day, recalling the thought that crossed her mind, 'I'm looking at pure evil!

Jane has spent her career dealing with criminals.

"The hair on the back of my neck stood up. No one had ever made me feel like that and no one has since." Backpacker murderer Milat is just one of the serial killers, terrorists, paedophiles and menacing gangsters Jane, now 70, had to manage during her 22-year career in correctional services.

PURE EVIL

While Jane quickly became used to copping the occasional spray from inmates, she still maintains it was the criminals that were nice to her she had to worry about.
