There’s a reason Aussie showbiz treasure Lorraine Bayly can’t stop smiling, revealing she’s quietly confident she’s beaten a serious bout of breast cancer and now feels blessed to be alive.
Lorraine’s ordeal began last November when she discovered a lump on her right breast and was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer.
“I was getting ready for bed and, as I lifted my arm to get undressed, I noticed a pale, puckered mark on the side of my right breast,” recalls the 83-year-old.
“There was no discomfort, but the lump was hard and about the size of a large walnut. I was stunned I hadn’t noticed it sooner.
“The next day I called my doctor in a panic and immediately underwent an array of tests, including a mammogram, ultrasound and a biopsy.
“It turned out I had stage three breast cancer, which capped off what had been a year from health hell.”
Lorraine was one of the first presenters on Play School and became one of our favourite TV mums playing matriarch Grace Sullivan in the wartime drama The Sullivans, from 1976 to 1983, before going on to star in legal drama Carson’s Law.
