She became America’s sweetheart in the 1980s and ’90s, thanks to a string of cosy romantic movies like When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless In Seattle that saw audiences fall in love with her heartwarming charm and twinkling smile.
But Meg Ryan reveals she was left “burned out” by her acting career and dipped out of the limelight “to live more”.
“I didn’t feel like I knew enough any more about myself or the world to reflect it as an actor. I felt isolated,” says the star, who last appeared on the big screen in 2015’s Ithaca.
Now, she’s preparing to make her first romantic comedy in 13 years, What Happens Later, alongside fellow ’90s favourite David Duchovny, 61, which she will star in and direct.
“Here we go!” gushed the excited star on Instagram while announcing the news on May 3.
The 60-year-old’s new movie will follow ex-lovers Willa (Meg) and Bill (David), who are reunited for the first time in decades when they both find themselves snowed in at an airport overnight.
“I’m aware now that romantic comedies are confections, but they have construction,” says Meg of trying to make movie magic with her new flick, which will begin filming later this year and is set for release in 2023. “There’s architecture. It’s not something I was aware of back then.”
