Their brotherly bond was once so strong, they lived in neighbouring palace apartments, shared offices and staff for their joint charity projects, and relied on each other for daily friendship, love and support.

But now, almost a year since their rift was first reported, Prince Harry has opened his heart in an extraordinary TV documentary, confirming his falling-out with Prince William and revealing the extent of his and the Duchess of Sussex’s anguish as they struggle to cope with public life.

While palace aides are said to be furious with the lack of discretion after Harry admitted he and his older brother were now “certainly on different paths”, insiders reveal that William and his wife Kate feel nothing but concern for the father-of-one, whose emotional wellbeing is said to be hanging in the balance.

Harry, 35, appeared drawn and stressed in the ITV documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, which followed him and his wife on their inspiring tour of Africa, and sources say the Cambridges are desperately trying to reach out to offer their support.

“There’s huge concern for them at the moment from all quarters,” tells a well-placed palace source. “But no-one is more upset about the situation than William and Kate. They watched the show together and couldn’t believe what they were seeing. Until now, William has been at Harry’s side his whole life and supported him during his most difficult times. It’s very hard for him to see his brother so downcast.

“He’s desperately trying to get through to him. Despite all that’s happened between them, he still feels enormously protective over his little brother and he loves him very much. He just wants to be allowed back into his life so that he can help, because he says there’s no doubt Harry is in crisis.”
