Gauri Sheoran was the lone Indian to win Gold at the World University Shooting Championship held in March 2018 in Kuala Lumpur. She won the Gold in the 25m pistol event, scoring 37 points in the final- 4 more than Wang X of China. Gauri hails from Bhiwani and is following in the footsteps of her brother Vishwajeet Singh who is also an international competitor in shooting.
The 21-year-old student of Masters Degree in Mass Communication at DAV College, Chandigarh, is one who was part of the national junior team for about five years, and who made the women’s team for the World Cups in 2014, Gauri has not kept pace with the fast rising stars, owing perhaps to her varying interests. She will continue to aim for the bull’s eye until life takes its own course. Gauri was inspired by her elder brother who was already into shooting. Though she started at the age of 10, it was only in Class 10 that Gauri turned professional. She is now a member of the national shooting team that won a silver medal at the recent 10m air pistol event in the InterShoot International Airgun Shooting Championship in The Hague, the Netherlands. Gauri has today won in the 13th South Asian games 2019.
Holding a century of medals at just 21, Gauri Sheoran, the woman behind the pistol is more than the shooter and the achiever she is. She also recently won gold in the Women’s Sports Pistol in the 19th Kumar Surendra Singh (KSS) shooting championship at the Dr Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad. Excerpts from her interview:
There are lot of career options available these days, why did you choose to come in this sport, which is dominant by men?
