"I couldn't believe it when we jumped clear and won it, given the trouble every one else had," said Maisie, who has been riding the 15-year-old gelding since October, quickly finding form with a 148cm victory at the London International (LIHS) in December.
But team duties have kept them away from the premier circuit in recent weeks, making this their first bid at getting to Birmingham.
"The first fence here was set at a bit of an awkward angle, which was upsetting people's rhythm, and we got closer to it than I would have liked, but I managed to react quickly, push on and get going," she said.
