SMMT reveals five-point plan to help UK automotive sector

CAR industry trade body the Society (SMMT) has challenged the Government to adopt five critical measures or risk losing vital jobs and investment to rivals overseas.

The SMMT said its strategy would support the industry's drive to meet Government electrification targets, and guarantee mobility for all through a 'right to charge' that mandates delivery of public charging and refuelling infrastructure with binding targets. It also urged the Government to implement a fair system of vehicle taxation and other duties, to encourage the switch to zero-emission vehicles and provide certainty and affordability to consumers.

This hard-hitting manifesto was launched by SMMT chief exec Mike Hawes, who said measures within it would create conditions for the UK to make 750,000 electric cars annually, worth £106bn to the economy.
