Although the (E30) M3 debuted in 1986, South Africans had to wait for the second generation (E36) M3 for the opportunity to purchase one.
This iteration wasn't as inyour-face as its predecessor but still packed a punch, albeit in a more subdued visual package. Clues that this was indeed an M3 included M side mirrors for improved airflow, sculpted aprons on the lower sections of the front and rear bumpers, and unique double-spoke alloy rims.
With its subtle styling and plentiful punch, it was something of a wolf in sheep's clothing. CAR labelled it "one of the most desirable cars on the road" in a 1994 road test.
Packaging
Unlike the E30 M3, this model had been designed for everyday practicality. Underlining this was BMW's decision to expand the line-up with a saloon version, complementing the two-door coupé and convertible.
Of course, the coupé was sleeker-looking but it was not as practical as the four-door. Prefacelift models came with cloth seats, and the rear bench, across the range, folded forward, expanding the loading area.
A facelift in 1995 introduced subtle visual enhancements.
