ALL'S VUEL THAT ENDS VUEL

Heavy hybrid gear bolted on a supercar? Sounds wrong. And yet it works so, so well

ALL'S VUEL THAT ENDS VUEL

I WOULD NOT NORMALLY STEAL A glance at the speedo on track, but this time curiosity gets the better of me. Gulp: 275 km/h the numbers burning bright white on the digital dash and still climbing. So, this is what 1,015 hp feels like. Spring-loaded, my eyeballs flick upwards and lock on to the apex as Vallelunga's Kermit green Armco stretches and blurs in my peripheral vision.

Up ahead is easily the fastest corner on track and we are coming in hotter than the bare metal gear-lever on a Diablo Roadster left to fry in the midday sun. Curva Grande beckons. I lean on the brakes and 1.9 tonnes of supercar sheds speed like a parachute, tyres heaving, torque vectoring fighting to keep us planted-but I have left it too late...

In previous Lamborghini hypercars, carrying a few too many km/h into a fifth-gear corner and making it out the other side required either luck, skill or the grateful surrender of one of your nine lives. The Revuelto is different. Sitting in Vallelunga's pit-lane, bathed in the early-morning southern Italian sun, it does not have the same angular aggression as the outgoing Aventador, although the sloping stance is still unmistakably Lamborghini.

Peer inside and there is much that is new, with the Y-shape design of the dashboard and centre console looking as if it is on loan from a spaceship, mirroring exterior details such as the daytime running lights. Larger occupants are no longer made to feel like unwelcome guests, while luxuries such as cup-holders and a place to put your phone have been added. The theatre of the Italian supercar is still there, just this time you can get comfortable.
