Torque of the Town

The larger-hearted Mercedes GLE is quite a quick mover and not so much a shaker. We drive the "400 d" diesel with a potent six-cylinder-long heart

Torque of the Town

HOW BIG IS TOO BIG? REMEMBER WHEN Mercedes offered the 4.0-litre V8 turbo-diesel with 306 hp and 700 Nm? Well, not here but in the European versions of the S-Class and the then MLClass SUV. This GLE 400 d packs more firepower and the same torque but from a quarter less displacement and cylinders. If it may be recalled, the GLE 400 d first arrived as a "Hip-Hop Edition" that was imported as a completely built-up unit (CBU) and commanded an eight-figure price tag. This one is no different. I was all smiles.

I was happy to get my hands on the big six-cylinder diesel soon after sampling the new GLC for India. Tight city roads, bends, road work in transit, and the open highway would make for an ideal mix of driving conditions. And the smile grew wider.
