2023 BMW X7

Motor Trend|January 2024
BMW’s updates to the X7 address a few of our complaints about last year’s version. It gets a redesigned front end, retuned handling, and a particularly nice distraction: more power. Yet that might not be enough to impress for such a pricey offering.

2023 BMW X7

The entry-level X7 xDrive40i’s 3.0-liter turbo I-6 gets a 40-hp bump, so it now puts out 375 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. You can feel the improvement immediately on the road, and the X7 is fun in a straight line and vastly improved in the corners compared to the previous model. The 2023 X7 is grippy and graceful, balancing comfort and capability nicely while committing fully to neither. Available off-road screens, cameras, and features like hill descent control help keep the driver informed and in control in trickier conditions, should it ever end up on anything more advanced than a beach access road.

CAN WE PLEASE GET EV MOTORS OUT OF THE CAR?

Nineteenth-century EVs were as likely to use inboard motors as they were wheel-hub motors. OG car guy Ferdinand Porsche raced a wheel-hub-motored EV in Vienna in 1897, and Lohner and others built production versions from 1900 to 1920. Porsche's direct drive eliminated the friction of a geared or chain drive but also lacked their torque multiplication. So the copper and iron required to generate sufficient torque to accelerate his heavy batteries resulted in 320-pound motors.
