When Chevrolet introduced the second-generation Colorado in 2015, the company marketed it as an all-new pickup. The reality was far murkier, as what Chevy really brought over to North America was little more than a modified version of the truck it had sold in global markets for years. This time, however, third-gen Colorado is genuinely all-new.
The new version begins with a Silveradoderived frame. Chevy moved the front axle forward, which stretched the wheelbase by 3.1 inches while decreasing the front overhang. The Colorado now also shares a six-lug wheel bolt pattern with Silverados, opening a world of wheel choices. There are two available track widths and three ride heights. Absent are the old extended-cab and long-bed options. Instead, Chevy offers the new Colorado only in a crew-cab, short-bed configuration.

The heavy-duty truck world moves more slowly than other pickup classes, and progress comes in spurts. Take the Ford F-Series Super Duty, whose recent refresh included softer-edged styling, a new entry-level gas-fed V-8, a new high-output 6.7-liter turbodiesel V-8, and myriad small improvements like new bedside steps. Is it still basically the same truck as before? Absolutely, but it’s also a better Super Duty, however incrementally.
