Ratan Tata, the legendary industrialist and philanthropist, passed away on October 9 in Mumbai at the age of 86. His departure marks the end of an era for Tata and Sons, the multibillion-dollar conglomerate with subsidiaries like Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Steel, and many others, collectively contributing to an empire exceeding $100 billion in value.
Born into the distinguished Tata family, Ratan Tata's early path was shaped by both privilege and humility. He attended Cornell University in the USA, where he studied architecture-a field that would later influence his design-driven approach to business.
During this time (as recounted in a documentary featuring interviews with his former classmates) Tata's character shone through. His peers spoke of his humility, recalling how he chose to drive a modest car despite having a Mercedes at his disposal, reflecting a grounded nature that stayed with him throughout his life.
Ratan Tata's career began under the mentorship of J.R.D. Tata, who played an instrumental role in shaping his vision and leadership style. His journey within the Tata Group was marked by determination and a willingness to start from the ground up. He began at Telco (now Tata Motors), working his way through the ranks, from the shop floor to middle management, before ultimately taking on the task of leading the Tata Group as Chairman.
