Think of Hot Rods and the picture that comes to mind is a modified car, generally from the 30s with a massive V8 engine, no bonnet, side exit exhaust and big rear tyres. They were the antithesis of the light, over-engineered and expensive sports cars from Europe. They democratised powerful cars, allowing just about anyone to compete with factory race cars.
