When the U.S. Army asked automakers to build a “light reconnaissance vehicle” at the start of World War II, the prototype was delivered within 75 days. The original Jeep was born out of military necessity but today this rugged off-roader has achieved genuine icon status. Eighty years ago, the Willys MB Jeep played a key role in the D-Day landings, ferrying GIs across the fields of Normandy in an operation that marked the beginning of the end of Nazi power in Europe.
