This followed an announcement by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (agriculture department) in October 2021 that hemp had been reclassified as an agricultural crop under the Plant Improvement Act (No. 53 of 1976).
At the same time, minister of agriculture Thoko Didiza announced the opening of the application process for hemp permits.
She said in a statement that this allowed for the importation, exportation, cultivation, sale of and research into hemp in South Africa.
