After many years of being treated as no more than pets or toys for children, they are now being taken seriously by people who know horses and are even winning prizes in competition with purebred horses of normal size. So says Welma Joubert, of Turn (pronounced Toorn) Miniature Horse stud, near Baviaanspoort, just north of Pretoria. Her stallion, Turn Burggraf Caspar, 830mm at the shoulder, was judged Reserve Supreme Champion for open, in hand classes at the 1990 Cullinan/ Bronkhorstspruit Show, being beaten by a Partbred Arab mare, Algamila Marinella, bred by Prof Boyazoglu. Turn Burggraaf Caspar was judged Champion of Champions for 1990 in straight competition with horses of his own size, Grand Champion at the Centurion (Verwoerdburg) Show, THS Horse of the Year for 1990, and Miniature Horse Champion at the 1990 Rand and Bela-Bela (Warmbaths) shows. Joubert started working with miniature horses about five years ago. She became interested in breeding them after buying a couple of the tiny horses for pets. Today she has a herd of about 30 animals.
