While the areas under mango and litchi production in South Africa have remained largely stable for both crops, more exports are needed to keep these industries buoyant. This was according to Derek Donkin, CEO of the South African Subtropical Growers’ Association.
He added that the 2022/23 litchi crop was larger than that of the previous season, and exports should increase from 5 000t to 6 500t. The mango harvest was estimated at between 60 000t and 70 000t, which was similar to the previous season’s.
He said the litchi industry was placing much hope on increasing exports to the US, which had started in 2017.
