Holi in Rajasthan is more than just a festival. It is a mix of colours showered like blessings, beats that make even the most reluctant dancer break into a ghoomar, and mawa kachoris to put you in a festive food coma.
From the regal Holika Dahan to the playful Kodamar Holi, every nook and corner of the state soaks in the spirit of Holi like no one else does. So tie that pagdi tight, wear your best whites (only to ruin them), and dive into celebrations. Because in Rajasthan, Holi isn't played; it's lived!
The Majestic Holika Dahan
Holi celebrations begin with Holika Dahan, a ritual bonfire that signifies the victory of good over evil. In cities like Jaipur and Udaipur, the royal families partake in this ceremony with grand processions featuring elephants, camels, and horses. The royal family of Udaipur, in particular, hosts an elaborate Holika Dahan at the City Palace, attended by dignitaries and tourists alike. The bonfire is lit with great pomp, followed by cultural performances including folk dances like Ghoomar and Kalbelia.
When Colours Take Over
The next day, Rajasthan wakes up to a riot of colors. Dhulandi, the heart of Holi, turns every street into a canvas where people smear gulaal on each other, groove to the beats of dhol, and let loose in the sheer joy of celebration. It is a grand farewell to winter and a vibrant welcome to spring. But beyond the seasons, Dhulandi carries the playful spirit of Lord Krishna. In places like Pushkar and Jodhpur, the energy is electric. Travellers and locals dive headfirst into the dancing, laughter, and kaleidoscope of colours.
Feast Mode
No Holi celebration in Rajasthan is complete without a feast that's as indulgent as the festival itself. The air is thick with the aroma of saffron, cardamom and deep-fried goodness, as families and friends come together to eat, drink, and revel in the festive spirit.
