TOUCHING THE PINNACLE OF SUCCESS

TOUCHING THE PINNACLE OF SUCCESS

We spoke with Capt Sanjay Sukhrani one of the most successful in this profession, to get a deeper insight on how a person not only evolves professionally but also personally while working in merchant navy.

As a young man setting on a career path, did you see merchant navy as an ideal choice for you then?

Incidentally, when my batchmates, from Sailor Today, Capt Sunil Nangia and Capt Ramji Krishnan reached out earlier, asking me to speak about my career and profession, I spent some time reflecting on where to begin. How did I end up where I am today? Was this part of a well-considered plan that I had executed flawlessly? Was it all fortuitous luck? Was I to use a very Bollywood term, a "Nepo Baby"?

The answer is complex, a mixture of having fantastic mentors, being in the right place at the right time, a healthy dollop of luck, and lots and lots of hard work. The choices I made were sometimes instinctive and sometimes well thought through. In short, to quote the lyrics of the famous song from the 1961 movie, Hum Dono, "Main Zindagi Ka Saath Nibhata Chala Gaya..." That, in a nutshell, describes my journey from Cadet to CEO.

Who or what influenced and motivated you initially?
