RAHUL MISHRA LIKES TO CRAFT TALES THROUGH HIS WEAVES AND EMBROIDERY. TANISHA BHATTACHARYA CHATS WITH THE CELEBRATED DESIGNER WHO WAS ALL THE RAGE AT THE NMACC INAUGURAL EVENT
TANISHA BHATTACHARYA
THE STORYTELLER

Belonging to a small village of Malhausi near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, Rahul Mishra first tasted success when he won the Best student of the year Award at his graduation from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, in 2005. This was the stepping stone to bigger things in life. In 2009, he became the first non-European designer to win a scholarship to Milan’s Istituto Marangoni.

He made his debut in 2006 at the Lakme Fashion Week with a collection using cotton handloom from Kerala. In 2013, he won the Indian leg of the International Woolmark Prize and later, the 2014 Woolmark Prize at the Milan Fashion Week. He’s the only Indian to have won the award. His work was featured in London’s Victoria & Albert Museum from 2015 to 2016 following his Woolmark Prize in 2014.

Recently, he made headlines at NMACC. The creme de la creme of both Hollywood and Bollywood were seen attending the event. What caught everyone’s attention was how Zendaya and Gigi Hadid carried off his creations effortlessly. He made India proud at the event and we talked to the designer about the experience.
