And last week, the cast of Friends echoed the sentiments of fans everywhere when they shared their devastation at the “unfathomable” loss of their co-star Matthew Perry, who died on Saturday 28 October at the age of 54.
In an emotional joint statement, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer wrote: “We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just castmates. We are a family.
“There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss. In time we will say more, as and when we are able. For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends and everyone who loved him around the world.”
TRAGIC LOSS
The actor, who played quick-witted Chandler Bing in the sitcom from 1994 to 2004, was found unresponsive in a hot tub at his home in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles after emergency services were called at 4pm on Saturday afternoon. Any announcement of the cause of death was deferred last week by LA authorities, pending further tests.
In the days following the tragic news, tributes poured in from those who had shared a screen with Matthew and those who – like so many around the world – had found joy in his portrayal of one of TV’s best-loved characters.
“I remember being thrilled to have met a natural talent, comedian and brilliant actor,” said Sarah, Duchess of York, who in 1998 had a cameo on Friends when two episodes were filmed on location in London. “It is a tragedy to lose you so early in life, rest in peace dear Matthew… you have given so much joy and laughter to so many.”
