And while new currency featuring the King's portrait will be phased in, his mother remains a constant presence on the first anniversary of her death.

His Majesty and the Queen are expected to spend this poignant milestone privately at Balmoral, the former monarch's beloved summer home in the Highlands and where she passed away on 8 September last year.

They have been joined by other members of their family, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, and are no doubt sharing memories of a much-missed mother and grandmother.

Royal sources say there are no plans for the royal family to commemorate the anniversary officially, either with a public event or at a private family gathering, but each will remember their matriarch in their own way, with the family expected to lead tributes on social media.

“The King will be remembering his mother in the same way she used to remember her father,” the Queen’s former press secretary Dickie Arbiter tells hello!. “Just as she used to spend that anniversary at Sandringham, where George VI died, he will probably spend the day in quiet contemplation at Balmoral.”

FAMILY TRIBUTES 

William and Kate are expected to spend Friday in St Davids in Pembrokeshire, where their itinerary is said to include a poignant visit to the cathedral, which the monarch herself visited several times.

Meanwhile, the Duke of Sussex will fly from his home in California to London to attend the WellChild Awards in his role as patron of the charity.
