It has been a turbulent fortnight of fallout since Phillip Schofield stepped down from his role on This Morning and, last week, the former TV presenter spoke out to tell his side of the story.
Sitting down with BBC journalist Amol Rajan for a highly emotional interview, the 61-year-old said that he was “desperately sorry” and spoke of the “catastrophic effect” the “relentless” criticism had had on him since he publicly admitted to lying about his affair with a younger male colleague.
Phillip, who presented ITV’s daytime TV show for over two decades and has been a familiar face on British screens since the 1980s, credited his daughters Molly and Ruby with helping him through the recent weeks.
“If my daughters hadn’t been there, I wouldn’t be here,” he said, visibly shaking. “They’ve been by my side every moment because they’re scared to let me out of their sight.”
He also said that he hadn’t been able to watch This Morning, which has been presented by the show’s Friday anchors Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond since Phillip announced his departure on 20 May, with his former presenting partner Holly Willoughby taking an extended half-term break amid the turmoil.
