Ever since the 1950s, when Brigitte Bardot filmed And God Created Woman here, St Tropez has been synonymous with sensual French chic. Celebrities from around the world flock to the Côte d'Azur resort, giving its legendary promenade, beaches and nightspots a unique glamour.
But, as longtime resident Stéphanie Réhault tells us, there is a quieter side to this magical spot, one that seems to inspire creativity. At her beautifully renovated villa, with its Golden Age ambience, the multi-talented artist, jeweller and interior designer talks about the lifestyle she loves.
Stéphanie, what is your background?
"My father is a military man - he was a colonel - so I grew up in a very strict environment. We moved around a lot, living in Germany as well as all over France. I was born in Paris, but almost by accident, as we were only staying in the city for three weeks.
“My mother never worked: she was ‘Madame Colonel’. But she comes from a creative family that boasts lots of cabinetmakers and artists, including her father.
“So I enjoy working with my hands; I do lots of different things, from painting and origami to DIY and wood-carving.”
You’re still known by your father’s name, Réhault…
“Yes, because I’ve never married. I have a son, Nicolas, from an eight-year relationship, but I’m now single.”
Tell us about your career…
