There is currently no reliable test for Parkinson’s, which is caused by the death of nerve cells in the brain that produce a chemical messenger called dopamine. Decreased levels of this hormone affect movement, causing Parkinson’s trademark symptoms, including shaking, tremors, stiffness and slurred speech.

Early diagnosis and intervention, however, would help preserve the dopamine-producing brain cells before they are damaged.
