Of the many disturbing moments in Netflix’s true-crime series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, about the ghoulish murders of American serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, it was

a court room scene that most upset Rita Isbell. Isbell is the sister of one of Dahmer’s victims and the scene depicted her victim impact statement that culminated in her screaming at the killer in court.

“If I didn’t know any better, I would’ve thought it was me,” Isbell told Insider of actress DaShawn Barnes, who portrays her in the series. “Her hair was like mine, she had on the same clothes. That’s why it felt like reliving it all over again. It brought back all the emotions I was feeling back then.”

Since its release on September 21, Dahmer, which became Netflix’s mostwatched series in its opening week, has gripped audiences with its depiction of the life and crimes of the notorious serial killer – but opened old wounds for the loved ones of his victims.

Over a period of 13 years, Dahmer raped, murdered and dismembered 17 men and teenage boys, many of whom were African American and gay. He engaged in cannibalism and necrophilia with most of the bodies. Upon his arrest on July 22, 1991, investigators found body parts, including severed heads, in his apartment in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. “You think you’ve seen it all out here, and then something like this happens,” said investigating officer Rolf Mueller at the time of the case.
