In an explosive hearing, a Sydney court has heard that police are certain of the fate of toddler William Tyrrell, who disappeared from a NSW home eight years ago. On November 3, the court heard that officers confronted the boy’s foster mother last year, telling her they knew how the 3-year-old had died and where he was buried.
“We know why, we know how, we know where he is,” NSW Police Sgt Scott Jamieson told the woman. “We aren’t guessing, we aren’t bluffing – we are saying we know what happened and why it happened and where [William’s body] is.” The woman responded, “Why haven’t you got him then?”
In one of NSW’s most high-profile cold cases, William disappeared on September 12, 2014 from his foster grandmother’s home in Kendall on the NSW Mid North Coast. No trace of the boy, who was dressed in a Spider-Man costume, has been found. In what appeared to be a major shift in
the investigation last year, police conducted a search and dig at the Kendall home, and deployed luminol – a chemical that detects blood. Police announced at the time that their investigation had narrowed to “one person of interest”, and in court last week, a detective stated that police believed William’s foster mother knew where he was buried.
“It’s highly likely that we, if we found something, it would be a body,” said Det Chief Supt Darren Bennett. “We are looking for the remains of William Tyrrell.”
