A tale of II [or more?]

Some see it as the next frontier of the sexual revolution, or the logical evolution of relationships in an enlightened society. Others view it with suspicion, cynicism or outright disapproval. Whichever side you're on, there's no denying that polyamory - a subcategory of a movement known more broadly as consensual or ethical non-monogamy (ENM) - is more popular than ever before.

BEING POLYAMOROUS

Polyamory is different to other ENM relationship styles in that the relationships are based on romantic and emotional intimacy rather than purely sexual intimacy (such as swinging or casual sex, which are also forms of ENM). One rule unites them, though: all participants must be fully aware of, and consent to, this style of relationship.

If you're poly-curious, it's important to learn as much as you can about of the benefits and disadvantages of this relationship style to know if it's for you. We asked two experts to weigh the pros and cons.

TRACY ZIMAN JACOBS, INTIMACY COACH, ARGUES: "Fluid boundaries may lead to anxiety and confusion."

Just like monogamous relationships, polyamorous relationships must be built on communication, transparency, trust, and honesty. When one partner wants to open their relationship up, from monogamous to ENM, there is the potential that the other partner will simply 'go along with it for fear of losing their partner. This can be an incredibly painful experience for that partner.
