"TRY TO STAY AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO NATURE"
ARUNA LINGAM AND PRASHANT LINGAM
CO-FOUNDERS - BAMBOO HOUSE INDIA, HYDERABAD
Their pioneering efforts in eco-friendly construction are setting new standards for environment-conscious living
In 2006, first-generation entrepreneurs Aruna Lingam and Prashant Lingam founded Bamboo House India, dedicated to constructing eco-friendly bamboo and recycled plastic houses while uplifting rural artisans and waste-picker communities by offering them livelihood opportunities. Their venture uses natural and waste materials to build environment-friendly shelters. To date, this socially-conscious enterprise has successfully built about 750 eco-friendly homes as part of its commitment to promoting sustainable living as much as possible.
What does it mean to live sustainably?
Staying away from consumerism at home is sustainable living for us. We try to stay as close as possible to nature and use the least possible resources, either natural or manufactured. We refrain from overconsumption by repairing rather than replacing items, focusing on refusing, reducing, reusing and recycling.
What brought about your decision to live a more sustainable lifestyle?
Our journey into sustainable living stemmed from our upbringing, which is steeped in old-school values. We hold these principles close to ensure the environment remains unharmed by our actions. Living close to nature has a calming effect on the mind, and we've personally experienced the benefits of eco-living. We're passing these values on to our daughter.
How do you work to create awareness about eco-conscious living?
