India has a rich cultural heritage, and it is important to instil in children an appreciation for its many rituals and ceremonies by introducing them to these during celebrations. Now more than ever, it’s vital to build in the next generation an appreciation for our country’s rich cultural history by teaching them about its many festivals.
Festivals provide a unique opportunity for kids and parents to reconnect with each other by way of preparation for the celebrations. “In recent times, we have increasingly moved towards a digital generation and find ourselves occupied with technology; our kids were confined to these mediums due to the pandemic,” says Asha Vaghasia of We+Parenting, Ahmedabad. She feels this generation thrives and believes in logic, so it is essential that we help them connect to their roots by explaining the values and culture behind each festival and its traditions. This way, children don’t feel obligated to celebrate festivals, but rather feel happy to carry traditions on for years to come. “Celebrating festivals can also help children feel more connected to their families and social circle,” adds Asha. “Through festivals, respect and understanding can be inculcated regarding different religions, making them more adaptive and confident in their interactions with people.”
