How Kyra Sedgwick & Kevin Bacon have kept their love strong

It took just one date for Kyra Sedgwick to know she wanted to spend the rest of her life with Kevin Bacon. While working together on the PBS movie Lemon Sky in 1987, the two went to dinner and ended up talking and laughing for hours. But Sedgwick says it was how she felt the next day that made her realize he was the one. “I remember waking up and going, ‘I feel like home,” she says. “I realized, ‘Oh, that was him.’

For more than 35 years the couple have built a home together while balancing successful careers and raising their son Travis, 33, and daughter Sosie, 31. “We’ve always been each other’s biggest support and fans,” says Sedgwick, 57, who had a breakout role in 1992’s Singles and won an Emmy in 2010 for her hit TV series The Closer. More recently she’s found a passion for working behind the camera and just directed her husband—famed for films including A Few Good Men, Apollo 13 and Mystic River—in the new movie Space Oddity, about a young man who dreams of escaping to Mars after tragedy strikes.

As rain begins to fall on a cloudy March day in L.A., the two sit down to talk about their new movie and their lasting love story. When asked where they like to go to escape, without hesitation Bacon says, “If we’re in love together, it doesn’t really matter where we are.” A huge smile spreads across Sedgwick’s face. “Boy, that was a perfect answer,” she says with a hearty laugh. “I was going to say Connecticut!”
