Where does your passion for jewellery stem from?
My passion is fuelled by the levels of expertise necessary to create jewellery at a high level: the challenge of making something perfect from an aesthetic, technical, and functional perspective. Objects that are perfectly beautiful, perfectly made, and that work perfectly on the body. This is an impossibility as there is always something that could have been improved. The learning never ends. The goalposts are always moving, and I love that.
What do you love most about creating/ designing jewellery?
I am incredibly grateful for the unusual path I’ve had within the world of jewellery and for the power it has given me as a creator. I am able to think of an object in my mind and manifest it in a tangible and elevated way, and I am compensated to do so, which continually amazes me. To be able to surprise and delight a client with something meaningful that they will treasure; that is the thing I love most.
How much does your upbringing/culture influence your thought process and design sensibilities?
My family was able to travel extensively when we were children (my father was a medical geographer, with a specialty in ethnic medicine in Africa), and we lived in places such as Uganda and Kenya. Those early experiences of moving through very different cultures certainly made an impression on my design sensibility, although it took decades to emerge and make sense of it.
