With this rationale, I commenced on the Art Trail of Punjab Paintings that led me to view Collections in palaces, temples and the Kartarpur Fort. Additionally, the Trail led to numerous trips to the libraries at Lalit Kala Academy, Habitat Center and the Indira Gandhi National Centre of Arts, all in the national capital Delhi. I am sharing the finds of my year-long research through this essay.
The Categories & Styles
I soon discovered that most Punjab Paintings had major influenced of almost all categories or styles as they known to be - Pahari, Rajasthani, Mughal, Kashmiri and even English Colonial style. This could possibly be the reason that not many details are available regarding separate category of Punjab Paintings. In the past period, the state of Punjab had its boundaries from Lahore till Delhi. Today’s territories of Punjab have undergone several transformations since the partition in 1947 and again the division of greater Punjab into three states of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab & Haryana. In the olden times, boundaries of Punjab were spread into the pahari states (hilly regions); next Rajasthan was its neighboring state. More so, they flourished under Mughal rule and lastly under the British rule; all these points together clarify the influence of Pahari, Rajasthani miniatures, Mughal, Kashmiri and English-Colonial style, upon the Sikh paintings of that period.
