Visiting India has been on my bucket list since forever. Partly because my great grandfather first made the arduous journey from South India to Singapore more than a century ago, and I have always wanted to connect with one of my home countries. Partly because the country’s rich history, landscapes, architecture, food, clothing and culture beg for a closer look. But with its vastness it can be difficult pinning down an itinerary for a first-time visitor.
The state of Rajasthan in the northwestern part of India may not seem an obvious choice to those who prefer to head to Mumbai or New Delhi, or for tourists looking to visit the Taj Mahal in Agra, but it was a perfect opportunity to explore a lesser seen part of India.
Being hosted by Aman for a fourday and four-night Camp and Oasis experience was memorable not just because the luxury property had stunning locations and incomparably chic accommodation, but also because of the well-thought-out and curated tours and warm-hearted service I encountered on my trip.
AMANBAGH
To travel to Amanbagh in the Aravalli hills in Rajasthan, I first flew in from Singapore to New Delhi, and then took a three and a half hour drive from the airport. In a luxury vehicle and on a newly constructed highway that shortens the journey considerably, it was a fairly smooth ride in.
The site where Amanbagh sits was once the base of the Maharajah of Alwar’s tiger-hunting expeditions, and has been built to resemble a modern-day Mughal palace. The property pays tribute to this history with the use of distinctive local pink marble and sandstone, and architectural touches like scalloped arches and cupolas that recall India’s golden age. A sanctuary that sits in between the Aravalli hills, one of the focal points of the property is an emerald-green pool surrounded by the resort’s palatial suites, manicured gardens and further afield—the Sariska National Park.
