Here are 5 effective ways to enhance your oxygen intake naturally, leading to increased vitality and well-being, writes Dr Hansaji Yogendra, Director, The Yoga Institute.
Proning Technique
Part 1: Lie on your stomach, placing a pillow under your upper chest, another under your hips, and a third under your knees (lower part). Adjust the pillows as needed, possibly adding more support under the hips or legs. Rest for 30 minutes to 2 hours, breathing gently. This boosts lung blood circulation and enhances oxygen absorption. Optionally, rest your head on your hand, known as Makrasana.
Part 2: Transition to your sides, supporting your head with your arm in the Dhradasana position. Relax with folded legs. Spend 30 minutes to 2 hours on each side. This position, even during normal times, helps maintain oxygen levels and keeps alveoli open. Remember, this is a supplementary aid, and severe cases require medical attention.
1) Deep Breathing Exercises
Deep pranayama enhances lung capacity and oxygen levels. Practice these daily:
Equal Breathing: Inhale and exhale slowly with awareness. Complete 30 rounds daily. Engage all three sets of muscles - diaphragm, intercostal, and clavicular - for comprehensive benefits.
