ICAO VOWS FOR NET ZERO CARBON EMISSIONS BY 2050

At the 41st Assembly in Montreal, International Civil Aviation A Organization (ICAO) sets its goal to achieve net zero carbon emission by year 2050 for international flight operations. The UN aviation agency has members from 187 states and 57 Organization with over 2500 delegates and this is for the first time since they gathered post Covid and adopted a collective long-term global aspirational goal (LTAG) to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

This year the theme of 41st Assembly of ICAO was "Aviation innovation and resilience, underpinning the continued sustainability of the air transport sector". The President of the ICAO Council, Salvatore Sciacchitano highlighted that the achievement of the LTAG will rely on the combined effect of multiple CO2 emissions reduction measures, including the accelerated adoption of new and innovative aircraft technologies, streamlined flight operations, and the increased production and deployment of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).

He further stressed, "States' adoption of this new long term goal for decarbonized air transport, following the similar  commitments from industry groups, will contribute importantly to the green innovation and implementation momentum which must be accelerated over the coming decades to ultimately achieve emissions free powered flight." The 41st ICAO Assembly had presence of the ICAO Council Salvatore Sciacchitano Mayor of Montréal, Madame Valerie Plante, the Deputy Minister of International Relations and La Francophonie of the Province of Québec, Madame Sylvie Barcelo, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Government of Canada, Mélanie Joly.
