Deciding on an appropriate use of your garden space is similar to deciding the furniture placement of a room. We spend more time outdoors during the warmer months, making our garden one of the most important areas on our property. Yet often very little planning goes into it.
Draw a simple plan diagram of your garden. Start with the boundary walls, structures and significant features. Make note of entrances, access, flow and how they connect. Stand in your garden and think about the optimum space for relaxing, socialising and play. Make notes on your diagram indicating the areas for different activities. Observe surrounding views and sounds, and indicate where you need screening from neighbouring buildings or noise.
Stick to geometric shapes for your functional spaces: circular, rectangular or square seating area.
DEFINE EACH SPACE → Raised Walls To Demarcate The Garden Room Gabion, mosaics, sleepers and timber benches all work well.
→ Pergolas To Define And Enclose Pergolas vertically define a space and gives a sense of protection.
→ Hedges Hedges offer a soft alternative and are great for wind and sound protection.
→ Levelling Make sure the garden is on one level. If the area slopes or has a step, it will break up the space, reducing its functionality and purpose. Retaining blocks or sleepers are a simple solution. Any change in level indicates a separate space. Different levels can create great interest and effect in the garden both visually and physically.
