'We gave this awkward loft room a luxe hotel look'

With a little clever layout planning and some careful budgeting, Anna and Graham McGee created a practical, spacious, spa-inspired bathroom

When Anna and Graham McGee first moved into their Edwardian home, they knew they had their work cut out for them to get it up to scratch. ‘We loved the period features, but we hated the 1970s wallpaper, which was absolutely everywhere,’ says Anna.

Having revamped the rest of the house, last year they started thinking about making the most of the space in the loft, too. ‘Other neighbours on our road had extended into the loft, so we knew it was a possibility,’ explains Anna. ‘The roof was an interesting shape, so we appointed an architect, Carolina at @cahomesarchitects, who we knew would be able to maximise the available space and think of some creative ideas for making the most of the shape and structure of the roof.’

THE PROJECT

The architect helped the couple visualise how the space could look, as well as how to make the most of the triangular roof. ‘We wanted to create new space with a really luxurious feel, but also add some industrial details,’ explains Anna. ‘It was important to get enough headroom and also to let in as much light as possible.’ The plan was to maximise the triangular-shaped roof structure with an apex window to make it a standout feature, and to also design a layout that would balance everyday practicality with style.
