Willemse's rugby journey commenced at a young age. His early talents were nurtured at Paul Roos Gymnasium, a school celebrated for producing top-tier rugby players. His impressive performances at school level quickly caught the attention of scouts, leading to his selection for the Western Province youth teams. His stellar play in these leagues earned him a spot in the South African Schools team, further cementing his reputation as a promising talent.
In 2017, Willemse made his professional debut with the Stormers in Super Rugby. His debut season was characterised by his flair, speed and game-reading ability, quickly making him a fan favourite. Willemse's skill set, encompassing a powerful running game, accurate kicking and solid defence, marks him as a well-rounded player capable of altering the course of a match.
Willemse's international career began with his selection for the South African U20 team, where he played a pivotal role in their campaigns. His performances at junior level paved the way for his inclusion in the senior Springbok squad.
