A GLIMPSE INSIDE THE HISTORIC CEREMONY
CHARLES’ CORONATION EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

He has been the heir to the throne since he was just three years old and now Charles has finally stepped into the role of King. But while the 73-year-old’s accession to the throne happened automatically the moment Queen Elizabeth II passed away, it will still be several months before his official coronation.

The new King declared 17 days of Royal Mourning following the death of his mother – an additional week on top of the traditional 10-day mourning period.

On Saturday September 10, an accession ceremony was held at St James’s Palace to proclaim Charles the new monarch. Royal fans eagerly watched the historic event as it was broadcast live around the world.

King Charles III’s actual coronation will take months of meticulous planning. In fact, his mother’s coronation didn’t take place until 16 months after Elizabeth first took the throne.

The former Prince of Wales is said to favour a leaner, more modern monarchy and his coronation service is expected to be the same. Codenamed “Operation Golden Orb”, the service at Westminster Abbey is set to be a much shorter and less costly affair than his mother’s coronation was in 1953. Not only will the guest list be smaller, there will also be fewer members of the royal family present.
