The Whale

Having finally scored his first Oscar nomination for his performance, there's a good reason why The Whale has been dubbed the start of an overdue 'Brenaissance'.

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, Brendan plays Charlie, a 270kg gay man who has confined himself to his apartment following the death of his partner. As he faces his own impending demise, Charlie attempts to reconnect with his daughter (Stranger Things' Sadie Sink).

When the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival last September, Brendan received a six-minute standing ovation. The tear-inducing moment came after he says Hollywood blacklisted him for speaking out about being sexually harassed by a showbiz bigwig.

Talking about being re-embraced by the industry and the public, Brendan says: "I feel like I'm still waiting for someone to walk in and tell me that the jig is up."
