Yip Pin Xiu won Singapore’s first Paralympic gold medal at the Beijing Summer Games in 2008 (where she also took home a silver in a freestyle event)—and in the years since then, the national backstroke swimmer has won four more golds across a total of four Paralympic Games. Her sporting achievements, including five gold medals and two silvers at the World Championships as well as a gold and two bronzes at the Asian Para Games, have filled many newspaper column inches of much‑needed representation for persons with disabilities (PWDs), which is something Yip says she did not have growing up.
